Fast X director Louis Leterrier clarifies Vin Diesel's comments about the film being the first installment in an ending trilogy, casting doubt on the claims. The latest installment of the Fast & Furious franchise sees Diesel's Dominic Toretto and his team of family and friends taking on a new villain played by Jason Momoa. Fast X was originally said to serve as the penultimate movie in the long-running action series, but Diesel expressed earlier this year that Fast & Furious 11 might not be the end after all, with a twelfth film possibly on the cards.
Now, in a recent interview with GamesRadar, Leterrier addresses Diesel's claims, saying that the actor may just have been exaggerating. While not dismissing the possibility of Fast & Furious 11 serving as the middle installment of a trilogy, the director stresses that nothing has been decided just yet. Check out Leterrier's full comment below:
"The one thing about Vin is like when he’s on a press line, he will say anything to get out of that press line. And I’m kind of like him and go, 'Yeah, sure, we will go to the moon in the next one. Bye.' And then you never forget!
"Obviously the next one is coming, and then yeah, one movie at a time. I think the one thing that Hollywood keeps reminding us is that it's one step at a time, put one foot forward at a time. Let's count our blessings. We're very lucky this movie was well-received and well-loved, people went to see it in a movie theater and now they’re going to see it at home. It's one at a time.
"I mean maybe what he was saying is that there’s 25 years of filmmaking and storytelling, three acts, two hours and two movies, between the last one and this one, might not be enough to tell the story that is needed, and that’s what we’re figuring out these days."
Will Fast & Furious 12 Actually Happen?
While at Fast X's Rome premiere, Diesel told a reporter that, "when [the studio] saw part one, they said, 'Could we make Fast X the finale, a trilogy?'". This seemingly confirmed that plans were in place for Fast & Furious 12 to actually serve as the franchise's conclusion. Subsequent comments from Leterrier, in addition to his most recent clarification above, suggests that while it may not be a done deal just yet, it's still a possibility. This would suggest that Universal is taking a hard look at the financials before committing to too many additional movies.
Dwayne Johnson's Luke Hobbs is confirmed to be getting his own standalone movie, which is expected to serve as a setup for Fast & Furious 11. It's very possible that the studio will wait to see how Johnson's film performs before giving Fast & Furious 12 the green light. Fast X's box office numbers, after all, while not disastrous, are definitely not as strong as Universal was hoping for considering the movie's massive budget, with its domestic performance, in particular, proving underwhelming.
Universal will also take Fast X's digital release sales into account, with a strong showing on home viewing platforms potentially able to make up for its softer box office. While Fast & Furious continues to be a draw internationally, Fast X's middling reviews and domestic reception suggests franchise fatigue could become more of an issue moving forward. If Fast & Furious 11 and 12 both happen, it seems fairly clear that Universal will need to find a way to make these movies for considerably less money.
