After seeing the rapid adoption of Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS) by several automakers and almost every electric vehicle (EV) charging provider, the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) has announced it will be putting NACS on the fast track to standardization.

In a statement on Tuesday SAE said the move to standardize Tesla’s charging technology will ensure that any supplier or manufacturer will be able to use, manufacture, or deploy the NACS connector on electric vehicles (EVs) and at charging stations across North America. The standardization process is the next step to establish a consensus-based approach for maintaining NACS and validating its ability to meet performance and interoperability criteria, the organization said.

“Standardizing the NACS connector will provide certainty, expanded choice, reliability and convenience to manufacturers and suppliers and, most of all, increase access to charging for consumers,” said Frank Menchaca, President, Sustainable Mobility Solutions, an innovation arm of SAE’s parent company, Fullsight.

SAE didn’t say how long the standardization process typically takes, but did say it would be developed on an “expedited timeframe”, explaining it is one of several key initiatives to bolster North American EV charging infrastructure.

The announcement by SAE comes on the same day that Volvo announced it was also adopting NACS for its EVs. With Volvo there are now four major EV automakers that have adopted NACS, joining Ford, General Motors, and Rivian.
