One man in his 40s drowned Friday in West Vancouver after jumping into a fast-flowing creek to save a dog.

West Vancouver police say shortly after 9 p.m., emergency crews were called to Cypress Falls Park where a man had gone missing after jumping into the creek to rescue the pet.

The man and his wife had been walking the dog in the park when the animal was swept away in the water, according to police.
In an attempt to retrieve the dog, the man was also swept away. The West Vancouver Fire Department and North Shore Rescue worked into the evening to locate the man however they could not find him.
Shortly before 8 a.m. Saturday, the man’s body was recovered from the creek. The dog also died. West Vancouver police say at the request of family they will not be releasing the man’s name.
“This was not the outcome we had all hoped for and it is an enormous tragedy for the family of the victim and our community” said West Vancouver police Sgt. Mark McLean, in a statement. “Our hearts go out to them”.
