The Prince Edward Point Bird Observatory Spring Birding Festival will be held from May 14 -23. Early morning guided hikes in Traverse Woods and banding demonstrations resume after a two-year hiatus.
“While it is still necessary to observe COVID precautions, we are happy to welcome people back to observe our operations and to take advantage of a guided hike led by one of our volunteer expert birders,” PEPtBO president Julie White explains.
Special events this year include a webinar presentation by well-known naturalist and author Michael Runtz on May 20. Entitled Birding in the Fast Lane – Surviving a 24-Hour Birding Marathon, the webinar will detail Michael’s adventures completing a Great Canadian Birdathon. This fundraising event engages birders all over Canada to document all the species they can identify in a 24-hour period. Few birders however take the 24-hour period as seriously as Michael Runtz. The webinar promises to be an entertaining look at “serious birding.”
On May 23, author Merilyn Simonds will be at Half Moon Bay Winery to introduce her new volume Women, Watching: Louise de Kiriline Lawrence and the Songbirds of Pimisi Bay. The book is a memoir/biography of a mid-century bird woman who was nurse to the Dionne quintuplets and escaped that mania into the wilderness where she discovered birds and went on to do ground-breaking research.
On World Migratory Bird Day, May 14, Pamela Stagg and Ramesh Pooran will present Nighttime Sounds and Sky. This is an opportunity to listen to radio personality and birder Pamela Stagg as she helps identify night-calling birds and to view the night sky with well-known local astronomer Pooran.
