Due August, blazing fast speeds are coming to Tiny’s information superhighway.
During a recent committee of the whole meeting, Mayor George Cornell took time to acknowledge correspondence in regards to the signage and “lots of that orange conduit that’s being laid” alongside the township's roads.
SWIFT (Southwestern Integrated Fibre Technology) is a non-profit, municipally-led broadband expansion project, aimed at bringing high-speed internet to rural communities across Ontario.
“This (correspondence) will become a monthly project update from SWIFT,” noted Cornell, “and in particular it speaks to the project here in Simcoe County and more specifically the Township of Tiny.”
Cornell invited the public to visit the resources section of the SWIFT website where a viewable map of the project areas can be accessed for further information.
“And our timing for that project looks now about August of 2022.”
In addition to the SWIFT fibre-optic network, Cornell also gave a small update on the Universal Broadband Fund, a $2.75 billion project to support high-speed internet in rural and remote communities across the country.
“We are aware that Rogers has put an application forward to the federal Universal Broadband service fund, and we are waiting to hear the results of that,” added Cornell, “and Tiny has been included in the Rogers application.”
Deputy Mayor Steffen Walma was excited about the communication.
“Fast internet is coming; that is the synopsis of what he just said,” Walma summarized with a chuckle.
Last year, the township approved the installation of two telecommunication towers in Wyevale and Wyebridge respectively, which would provide 5G and LTE mobile to residents through Bell Mobility.
Information on the upcoming broadband upgrades to Tiny are available on the internet services page of the Tiny Township website.
The monthly SWIFT correspondence including project completion progress and plan overview can be viewed within the agenda page located on the Tiny Township website.
