The Golden Knights remained unbeaten at 3-0 overall while Nazareth is still looking for its first win at 0-3. Clarkson will faces a pair of SUNYAC schools next week, visiting both Oswego State and SUNY Geneseo.
The Green and Gold roared out of the gates, scoring four times in the first five minutes as Sebastian Geiger, Matt Reilly, KJ Sarni, and Bryan Penney each found the back of the net in the early going. Greg Bilek got Nazareth on the board twice in the first quarter, but Clarkson maintained a four-goal lead through the first 15 minutes.
In the second, Clarkson pushed the margin to close to double figures when the Knights scored a pair of man-up goals late, with Thomas Fiebich finding Connor Holly at 4:59 and then Fiebich scoring from Sarni with just 11 seconds remaining. Overall, the Knights dominated in the first half, out shooting Nazareth 36-13 and winning the fight on groundballs at 25-13.
Instead of packing it in, Nazareth came out in the third quarter inspired, scoring three times in a stretch of less than 50 seconds as Jeremy Jacob, Quinn McKercher, and Brett Randall each tallied to make the score 13-7. The tail-end of the quarter saw things get even more interesting as Jacob scored two more goals and Brett Randall added another to pull the score to 15-11.
The biggest key of the fourth quarter came in the first three minutes. Jon Roth scored at 12:37 to make it 15-12, and it appeared that Naz would get within one on a goal from Brett Randall, but the score was waived off and possession changed to the Knights. Clarkson raced down the field and Matthew Vines found KJ Sarni at 12:03 to put the gap back to four goals. Two goals in quick succession from the Golden Flyers did reduce the margin to two midway through the quarter, but the Knights were provided an opportunity just a few minutes later with consecutive penalties called on the Flyers. Although the Knights did not score during their 90 seconds on the man-up, Matt Reilly scored shortly thereafter for an insurance goal.
Fiebich scored three goals and assisted on three others while chipping in three groundballs and causing two turnovers and Reilly recorded four goals and two assists for the Knights. Sarni also had five points on three goals and two assists while both Geiger and Penney scored three times. Matthew Hansen led the team with 10 groundballs, mostly on face-offs, and Matt Szwagulinski and Steve Kay each scooped up four groundballs. Jacob Mattice notched 11 saves in the Clarkson crease.
For Nazareth, Brett Randall led the way with six points on four goals and two assists. Jeremy Jacob added four points thanks to three goals and one helper and Jon Roth scored three times. Carson Pickeral stopped 12 shots in 46 minutes, also adding five groundballs, most coming on long attempts from the Knights. Griffin Randall also had four groundballs and caused a turnover.
