Alternative food lifestyles that stray away from the typical options are hard to come by. Even vegetarian or vegan options that are ready to eat are still not offered at many fast food locations. So for the non-carnivore, one has to get creative and not get stuck eating different potato dishes for every meal.
Being vegetarian or simply starting off the veggie lifestyle is a frustrating and arduous journey to begin. Finding places on campus that can accommodate a variety of food restrictions can be even more so.
Thankfully, veggies are always there to be relied on and to satisfy. Although fast food locations have made it challenging to find these options, changing the menu for oneself is quick and easy. Slowly accepting the ever-changing customer appeal and ever-growing non-meat-eating community. Afterall the customer is always right.
Slowly but surely, fast food locations are getting the hint that offering at least one plant-based option is better than losing a customer. For the ones still not understanding, here are a few ways to hack the non-friendly vegetarian locations on campus and save a few dollars along the way.
Aloha Java
Have a sweet tooth or searching for a quick bite to eat? This small coffee shed tucked away between Gordon Hall and the Humanities Building on campus serves up some tasty brewed coffee daily along with other tea options. Aloha Java also regularly has shorter lines than Starbucks.
Of course, it is the most veggie-friendly location on campus, whether you’re looking for a morning bagel with cream cheese or a pastry to accompany a complimentary iced coffee. The chocolate croissant satisfies any sweet tooth with the perfect amount of chocolate syrup and twice as much filling than Starbucks at a much more affordable option.
Baja Fresh
Taco Tuesdays are a tradition that many vegetarians have learned to let go of due to meat being the only option offered at taco trucks and many Mexican restaurants. With quesadillas being the closest to a vegetarian option available, cheese slowly loses its ranking on one's pallet. However, protein options do not have to be reserved solely for meat.
Baja Fresh offers a variety of colorful and tasteful roasted veggies, an alternative that is the cheapest option when ordering tacos or burritos. Alternatively, if you’re not feeling the extra veggies, simply opt-out of a protein option and take extra rice or beans instead. These choices are available to be applied on any menu option, whether a bowl, salad or burrito.
Panda Express
Another cuisine that seems to limit its offerings of meatless meals is American Chinese food. Panda Express falls into this category as most locations do not offer vegetarian-friendly food, but they offer plenty of greens when asked upon ordering. Whether ordering a bowl or plate, the most common orders include their chow mein and fried rice, yet the issue is the entree portion.
Super greens are there to save every veggie lover from missing out on eating in the Titan Student Union. A mix of flavorful green veggies — including kale, broccoli, and cabbage — can be ordered instead of sticking to veggie spring rolls, a standard go-to safe food.
Carl’s Jr.
Carl’s Jr. is located on the east side of Cal State Fullerton. Although famous for its value menu, the affordable options seem limited for students seeking better alternatives to their regular items provided. Of course, the release of the beyond burger was a huge win as a food alternative nationwide at Carl's Jr locations, but now it is a thing of the past.
Why not replace any original favorite burger combination with a beyond patty instead of a typical old cheeseburger? Less commonly known is the option to remove the patty from the burger by ordering any menu item with no meat and making it a grilled cheese with extra lettuce and tomato or even onion rings!
Titan Deals, which can be found on the Campus Dining page, is also a great place to check for free items as they are currently offering free small fries with a purchase of $5 or more, a popular safe food for vegetarians and vegans alike.
