The man stole the box from the A&W restaurant in the 800-block of Boyd Street at around 9 p.m. on Nov. 8.

“It’s disgraceful and disheartening that someone would steal donations that support our veterans,” said New Westminster Police Sgt. Sanjay Kumar. “If anyone saw who took the donation box we ask you to reach out to us.”

Police said some people in the restaurant witnessed the theft, but because the man was wearing a hooded sweatshirt, witnesses couldn’t give a proper description.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 604-525-5411.

Meanwhile, in Kelowna, police have arrested a man who allegedly stole poppy donation boxes from two separate banks.

Kelowna Mounties say a man entered a bank on Ellis Street on Nov. 8 and stole the poppy donation box sitting on the counter.

The next day, the man struck again. He went into another bank on Ellis Street, pretending to ask for directions, then grabbed the donation box from the counter and ran out.

Officers arrested the man a short time later.

The 24-year-old Kelowna man has since been released, and is scheduled to appear in Kelowna Provincial Court on Jan. 13 on two counts of theft under $5,000.

Cpl. Tammy Lobb of Kelowna RCMP said poppy donation boxes have become a target for thieves in recent years.

Funds from the poppy campaign, which is organized by Legion branches, are used to support veterans and their families.
