NYC Fast Food Workers Have Stronger Job Protections - wbgo.org

Fast food workers in New York City now have better job protections.
Ed has been working at Chipotle for a year and a half and has been fighting for better protections.

“Since I started at Chipotle, we’ve had a number of employees, managers, even our GM’s not really any kind of warning, they just kind of give them the boot.”

Fast food workers can no longer be fired, laid off or have their hours reduced by more than 15 percent unless there is a legitimate economic reason or just cause. This is the central part of what’s called the Just Cause law that went into effect in New York City earlier this month. Employers now must give a written explanation for letting workers go or reducing hours. Starting next year workers can file complaints at the City’s Department of Consumer and Worker Protection
