Crown lawyer Christine Tays said Thursday morning the prosecution is proceeding with a direct indictment against Dylan Thomas Pountney, 19, and will need some time to prepare the application. If approved, a direct indictment would bypass a preliminary hearing and take the case directly to trial at a superior court.
Provincial court judge Jacqueline Schaffter, during a brief appearance at a virtual courtroom based in Leduc, approved an adjournment to July 29.
Pountney is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Jennifer Louise Winkler. He was arrested after a lockdown and manhunt as Mounties and police dog teams searched for a suspect.
Winkler was stabbed inside a classroom at Christ the King Catholic School and airlifted to an Edmonton hospital where she was pronounced dead.
