A 38-year-old man faces charges in what police said was a string of robberies in which a firearm was used, after a patrol officer came across a robbery in progress at a Carling Avenue fast food restaurant.

The suspect fled after a physical altercation with the officer in the July 15 incident near Kirkwood Avenue, the Ottawa Police Service said in a release Wednesday.

But the incident allowed patrol officers to collect the information and evidence needed for the Bayshore neighbourhood resource team to make an arrest the next day, police said.

Since last month, there have been eight separate robberies which police believe are linked. The robbery unit had been on the case for several weeks.

In mid-June, police said that they were looking for a suspect in at least five robberies, citing incidents reported over five days in Orléans, Barrhaven, Kanata and the Crystal Bay area. In each, a man was alleged to have walked into a business and demanded cash while holding a handgun. Workers were not harmed, police said.

On Wednesday, police said that an Ottawa man is charged with eight counts each of robbery with an offensive weapon and possession of a weapon for committing an offence, seven counts of wearing a disguise, and with one count each of escaping lawful custody and obstructing or resisting a peace officer.

He remained in custody.
