Audi e-tron GT owners to get 2 years free DC fast-charging in Canada - Driving

Who says nothing in life is free?

Those fortunate few who get their hands on a 2022 Audi e-tron GT or RS e-tron GT will get two years of complimentary DC fast-charging at Electrify Canada charging stations.

Electrify Canada is a partnership formed between Electrify America and Volkswagen Group Canada that is building DC charging infrastructure across the country. Currently there are 26 stations located on major routes in B.C. and Alberta, and between Windsor and Montreal. More stations are coming online in the near future.

According to Audi Canada, the free charging is capped at up to 30 minutes per session and comes with unlimited kilowatts during that 24-month period. Audi says that utilizing a DC fast-charger with the e-tron GT provides five to 80 per cent charge in about 22 minutes. In terms of kilometres gained on the range, that equates to approximately 290 kilometres.

U.S.-based owners of the e-tron GT get three years of free DC fast-charging at Electrify America stations upon purchase. Electrify America plans to have about 800 charging stations with approximately 3,500 chargers by the end of 2021.

Those American owners also get access to what Audi calls two “turn-key installation solutions for in-home charging” through charging provider Qmerit. Option 1, a NEMA 14-50 power outlet upgrade, is installed by a professional electrician for use with the included 9.6-kW AC capsule charger (Level 2, 240-volt/40 amps), which comes standard with the vehicle purchase. This charger includes plugs that can utilize both a standard 120-volt household outlet (1.2 kW); and a faster-speed 240-volt NEMA 14-50 outlet (9.6 kW).

Option 2, for e-tron GT owners looking for a more tailored home charging experience, makes Electrify America’s HomeStation available for purchase, along with a concierge service to schedule its home installation. Electrify America’s HomeStation is Wi-Fi-capable and offers 9.6 kW charging power.

No word from Audi Canada if a similar home-charging solution will be available for owners here.
