A Fast, Fresh Pasta for Those Perfect Peak Tomatoes - The New York Times

Grating your tomatoes preserves their juicy acidity, which sings when swirled into hot garlic oil with handfuls of basil.

August starts tomorrow, which means summer is at least halfway over and it’s high time to ask yourself: Have I eaten enough tomatoes? The correct answer, of course, is “most certainly not.” Ham El-Waylly is here to remedy this with his new recipe for grated tomato pasta (above).

This is exactly the sort of thing you cook when you’ve gone a little nuts at the market and brought home too many tomatoes, which may or may not be osmosing sweet juices onto your countertop (which is happening in my kitchen as I write this).

To make Ham’s recipe, you rub those tomatoes through the large holes of a box grater — the tomato skin will help protect your fingers — then mix the pulpy flesh with hot garlic oil and plenty of Parmesan. Add to cooked pasta, garnish with a handful of basil and dinner is done. (I particularly love the vivid way Ham describes pasta when it’s perfectly al dente: It’s done, he writes, when “the spaghetti has a very tiny dry core when cut in half.” Because even the best tomatoes can’t save a plate of woefully overcooked pasta.)

I’ve been making tomato salads almost every evening, and I have to admit I’ve grown weary of my olive-oil-salt-basil minimalism. Kay Chun’s Thai-style crunchy vegetable salad, with its dressing of fish sauce and lime, turns out to be the perfect antidote. Kay notes that you can use the tangy dressing on any combination of vegetables — it’s a clean-out-the-fridge salad that you can serve with bread or rice as a light meal, or alongside grilled or roasted meats or fish.

Peak summer is also peak slow cooker. Yes, I know, Crock-Pots bring up images of long-cooked winter meals, but they’re also ideal for making hearty dinners without heating up your house. One great example is Sarah DiGregorio’s chipotle-honey chicken tacos, in which the liquid slowly caramelizes in the cooker to create an intensely sticky, spicy sauce that’s worth planning ahead for.

Even simpler is a breakfast of overnight oats, which makes the hottest summer mornings easier to bear. Genevieve Ko’s recipe is supremely adaptable. Use whatever dried fruit and whichever milk you like, along with nuts for crunch and some seeds (chia, poppy, flax) for all those terrifically healthful properties that seeds have.

For dessert (not necessarily after breakfast, but hey, you do you), how about Dorie Greenspan’s Moka Dupont, a French icebox cake? Plain tea biscuits are dipped in espresso, tiramisù style, and layered with a thick chocolate buttercream. It’s fancier, richer and less sweet than American icebox cakes, though you’re permitted to skip the chocolate curls on top. This bittersweet marvel requires no embellishment.

Naturally, you’ll want to subscribe for these and all the other thousands of recipes at New York Times Cooking. If you need any technical help, send an email to cookingcare@nytimes.com. And I’m at hellomelissa@nytimes.com if you want to say hi.

That’s all for now, I’ll see you on Wednesday.

Australia to Fast-Track Missile Production for U.S. Exports - The New York Times

The announcement of this plan, along with steps to expand joint military exercises, was shadowed by the news of a helicopter crash during one such exercise.

Australia will accelerate efforts to make missiles for the United States as well as expand military cooperation and training under a plan announced on Saturday by Australian and American officials. The announcement came as the two countries paused a joint military exercise to search for the four-person crew of an Australian army helicopter that crashed overnight.

The crash and the new missile agreement highlight deepening military ties between the two allies and their defense industries — and the risks that come with the increased tempo of training exercises led by the United States in the region to strengthen deterrence against a more assertive China.

“Australian and U.S. defense force personnel are working closely together,” said Richard Marles, Australia’s defense minister, at a news conference Saturday afternoon.

The plans to cooperate and the crash followed two days of discussions in Brisbane between Australian officials and U.S. Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin III, whose visit was focused on expanding and clarifying how the two countries will work together on security in the region.

They gathered two years after a landmark deal called AUKUS, which also includes the United Kingdom. The deal aims to build a mechanism for sharing nuclear-powered submarines and developing other kinds of advanced technology, including hypersonic missiles and quantum computers and sensors. At Saturday’s news conference, Australian and American officials emphasized steady progress in a military collaboration reaching back more than a century to World War I.

For the new missiles, to be built with U.S. defense industry partners, Washington has agreed to fast-track licensing, with production expected to begin in 2025. The Australian government recently set aside $2.7 billion to acquire long-range strike missiles, which would bolster Australian stockpiles and could be exported to the United States or other countries, such as Ukraine.

“This represents a very, very significant step forward in our relationship and in the relationship of our defense industries,” said Mr. Marles, the defense minister.

Military analysts said the missile news reflected a growing realization that the defense industrial base in the United States, struggling to keep up with requests from Ukraine and the U.S. Defense Department, stands to benefit from the manufacturing support of other countries.

“As the war in Ukraine has made clear, defense industrial production is necessary to sustaining a war effort,” said Charles Edel, the Australia chair and a senior adviser at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. “It’s also critical to deterring wars from breaking out in the first place.”

As part of the defense plan announced by American and Australian officials, the two countries will also work together to increase logistics support in Australia for the U.S. military, expand cooperation in space and upgrade two air bases in northern Australia while enhancing training with the air forces of both the United States and Japan.

Mr. Austin said the United States would continue to increase rotations of American troops and equipment through Australia and work toward using the country for weapons maintenance “to enable Australia to maintain, repair and overhaul critical U.S.-sourced munitions.”

But he and Australia’s defense and foreign ministers say that heightened military activity brings greater risks. The United States and Australia are leading a training exercise called Talisman Sabre, which involves several locations and branches of the U.S. military, and the militaries of more than a dozen countries.

The helicopter crash during that training occurred around 11 p.m. Friday near Hamilton Island in the far north of Australia, according to military officials. It was a two-helicopter mission. When one went down, the second helicopter began searching for the missing crew members. As of Saturday afternoon, they had not been found.

“My thoughts today are with the families and search and rescue crews,” said Penny Wong, Australia’s foreign minister, adding: “We are reminded that those who serve our country do so recognizing the risk that that service entails and demonstrating every day the courage to take on that risk on our behalf.”

Thrift shopping trend to counterblow fast fashion in Türkiye | Daily Sabah - Daily Sabah

Türkiye, like many other countries, is grappling with the environmental consequences arising from its fashion industry. The allure of fast fashion, driven by ever-changing trends, has led to a massive carbon footprint, pollution and resource depletion. A shocking statistic reveals that nearly 25% of the youth in Türkiye frequently renew their wardrobes, inspired by fast fashion outlets, contributing to harmful landfill waste and excessive carbon emissions.

However, a ray of hope shines through the rising popularity of thrift shopping, which not only addresses the textile waste crisis but also fosters recycling and nature preservation.

In response to this pressing environmental concern, Daily Sabah took the initiative to seek insights from various sources. The newspaper reached out to an antiquarian, a group of fashion-forward teens, and a psychologist to gain a deeper understanding of the issues at hand and explore potential solutions to tackle this growing environmental hazard.

"The secondhand market is flourishing, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic, as consumers gain a deeper appreciation for nature and the need for sustainable practices," said an Istanbul-based antiquarian.

Antiquarian Hamza Demirkapu, who advocates for the secondhand market, emphasizes its role in the circular economy. Unlike fast fashion, which produces lower-quality garments often discarded after a mere 10 wears, thrift shopping offers longer-lasting clothes that can be resold multiple times, creating less waste.

"The shift toward thrift shopping is not only motivated by environmental concerns but also by a growing awareness of the social and economic benefits. As more consumers in Türkiye realize the negative impact of fast fashion on the environment and labor, they are choosing secondhand apparel as a more sustainable and socially acceptable option," said Demirkapu.

During an interview with Meliha Abideen, a college-going teenager from Istanbul hailing from a middle-class family, she candidly revealed her approach to keeping up with fashion trends. She said, "I take up part-time jobs to afford the latest fashion pieces as I observe my peers flaunting remarkable brand-new season outfits." She admitted feeling an irresistible urge to work extra hours and purchase the exact articles to stay in line with current trends.

Psychologist professor Sana Riaz sheds light on the phenomenon of "FOMO" (fear of missing out) and its connection to the thrill of shopping for new trends. "The hits of dopamine and adrenaline create a reward-seeking loop that causes us to reach for our debit card over and over again. Thrift shopping, on the other hand, can break this cycle by providing fashion accessories that cater to the desire for individuality without having to spend much."

"In the past, wearing used clothes was seen as normal, but with the rise of industrialization and mass production, it became stigmatized. However, as times change, especially for students with limited budgets, buying secondhand clothes has become a practical and environmentally conscious choice," said Demirkapu.

Hamza's study highlights the alarming rate at which the fashion industry changes trends, resulting in a loss of valuable resources. "Modern clothing lacks the durability and quality found in older garments, which could last for a decade or more. This shift in production and consumer behavior has led to an abundance of textile waste, particularly affecting underdeveloped and Third World countries," said Demirkapu.

To combat this waste, he suggests thrift stores like Topkapi Bit Pazar, Ferikoy Bit Pazar, Bakirkoy, and popular e-commerce platforms like Letgo and Dolap in Istanbul, where people can find unique vintage pieces and contribute to a more sustainable future.

Inflation and the desire for forward-fashion have also played a significant role in the popularity of thrift shopping. As purchasing power diminishes, Türkiye's youth turns to thrift shopping to stay fashionable without overspending. Moreover, online marketplaces and social media apps have facilitated the trade of used clothes, catering to the growing demand for one-of-a-kind clothing.

Demirkapu highlighted an alarming concern related to the environmental impact of synthetic textiles, and remarked, "It cannot be underestimated, as these materials can take hundreds of years to decompose. The growing mountain of textile waste poses a serious threat to underdeveloped and Third World countries, affecting labor, exacerbating natural disasters, and impacting the economy."

The shift toward thrift shopping signals a growing awareness among Türkiye's youth of the need for more sustainable and environmentally responsible practices in the fashion industry. As the secondhand market gains momentum, it may eventually outpace fast fashion, offering a glimmer of hope for a more sustainable future. With conscious consumer choices and a will to embrace vintage fashion, individuals can contribute to a healthier planet and a brighter future for the world.

This is why you randomly wake up at 4 a.m. (and how to fall back asleep fast) - Fortune

There was a time earlier on in the pandemic where I would wake up every morning between 3 and 4 o’clock. Sometimes I had to go to the bathroom or I had a genius idea for a new story. Other times it was for seemingly no reason at all.

Waking up in the middle night typically isn’t cause for concern. The average person wakes up several times throughout the night, but often doesn’t notice because they’re able to fall back asleep quickly (and they’re only awake for a few seconds). However, frequent night awakenings could also be a sign of insomnia, which has been found in 40% of older adults. But before you self-diagnose, it could be helpful to take a look at why you’re waking up in the middle of the night.

What causes you to wake up in the middle of the night

As it turns out, there are multiple reasons why we randomly wake up in the middle of the night, including, but not limited to:

  • Noise: This could be from the sound of traffic outside and birds chirping, or your partner snoring next to you (or, as was often the case for me, a noisy upstairs neighbor). “The brain continues to register and process sounds during sleep, and as such, noise can be a major sleep stealer,” explains Terry Cralle, registered nurse and representative of the Better Sleep Council.
  • Alcohol: A glass of wine with dinner may not seem like a bad idea, but as alcohol metabolizes in your system, it can disrupt your sleep, which can lead to tossing and turning and frequent awakenings. “Alcohol consumption is known to reduce the time spent in REM [rapid eye movement] sleep and is also considered a diuretic, which may lead to middle-of-the-night bathroom trips,” says Cralle.
  • Dinnertime: Eating too close to bedtime can also lead to waking up in the middle of the night due to heartburn and acid reflux.
  • Stress: If earlier-than-usual awakenings are not your norm, you may consider what’s going on during waking hours and if stress from life or work may be impacting your sleep.
  • Aging: As we get older, our quality of sleep tends to diminish as our sleep cycle changes and medication can impact your sleep schedule as well.

How to fall asleep quickly after waking up in the middle of the night

If you have a few more hours before your alarm is scheduled to go off, you can still salvage some of your sleep. Here’s how:

Resist the temptation to watch the clock

Checking the time (or notifications) can actually cause you to stay awake longer. “The light is disruptive and you may easily wind up checking content and before you know it, you have easily lost an hour (or more) of sleep,” says Cralle.

Avoid bright light

If you need to get up and go to the bathroom in the middle of the night, try to avoid bright lighting as much as possible. However, if you find yourself making several trips throughout the night, you should consult your healthcare provider.

Try to relax (but don’t force yourself to fall asleep)

Anyone who has ever found themselves staring at their ceiling in the middle of the night knows purposely trying to fall asleep can often lead to the opposite happening. Instead of forcing sleep, experts recommend trying relaxation techniques instead, such as deep breathing, meditation or progressive muscle relaxation, which involves tensing and then releasing each muscle in your body.

Leave the room

If all fails after 20 minutes, get up and go to another room to read or listen to soft music. Whatever you do, just make sure it’s in another room. “Doing this will lead your brain and body to associate your bed with wakefulness instead of with sleep,” Johns Hopkins sleep expert Luis F. Buenaver, Ph.D. said in a blog post.

“It can be difficult leaving a warm, comfortable bed after waking up in the middle of the night. But think of this step as an investment in better sleep—if not tonight then tomorrow night and in the future.” Once you’re sufficiently sleepy, you can return to your bedroom.

Tips to prevent waking up in the middle of the night

While occasional 3 a.m. awakenings may be unavoidable, there are science-backed ways to ensure you set yourself up for success before bedtime. For adults under 65, it’s recommended you get seven to nine hours of sleep per night with the goal of going to sleep within two to three hours after sunset.

It’s essential to go to sleep before midnight, Dr. Allison Brager, a neurobiologist with expertise in sleep and circadian rhythms, previously told Fortune, as this “optimizes time spent in restorative non-REM sleep.” Other tips for getting a good night’s rest include:

  • Keep a regular bedtime and wake time
  • Get light exposure, ideally sunlight, during the morning
  • Avoid large doses of caffeine throughout the day, but especially after 2 p.m.
  • Avoid large meals, alcohol and exercise close to bedtime
  • Avoid bright light exposure in the evening
  • Keep your bedroom dark and cool

Additionally, you can optimize your bedroom to include sleep masks and ear plugs; blackout curtains; a noise machine and/or other sound-absorbing materials, such as carpet, area rugs or wall hangings; and a comfortable sleep surface, such as mattress, pillows and bedding, to help you fall asleep (and stay asleep) more easily.

But if nothing’s working and you still find yourself getting up at 4 a.m. more often than not, then you’ll want to check with your doctor to see if you have a sleep disorder.

“Quality sleep is the foundation on which optimal health is built. Even if nutrition and exercise are at their best, without proper sleep their benefits are greatly reduced,” Dr. Abhinav Singh, medical director, Indiana Sleep Center, expert at SleepFoundation.org, and co-author of Sleep to Heal: 7 Simple Steps to Better Sleep, previously told Fortune. “Sleep is important for metabolic health, immune health, muscle repair, optimal brain function and mental health. Optimal sleep not only adds years to your life, but life to your years.”

PM unveils planned Kiryat Shmona-Eilat fast rail, says could link to Saudi Arabia too - The Times of Israel

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced Sunday a NIS 100 billion ($27 billion) plan to link the northern city of Kiryat Shmona to the Red Sea resort of Eilat in the far south by rail.

He went even further, saying the line “will be able in the future to link Israel to Saudi Arabia and the Arabian Peninsula, we’re working on that too.”

Netanyahu has set normalization of relations with Saudi Arabia as a prime target, but this has appeared increasingly unlikely due to the influential far-right elements in his government. The New York Times reported Saturday, citing an Israeli official, that a normalization deal would require “significant concessions” to the Palestinians that are unlikely to be approved by the current hardline coalition.

“My vision is for every Israeli citizen to be able to travel to or from the center from anywhere in the country in less than two hours,” Netanyahu said at the start of his weekly cabinet meeting. “In most cases under an hour, and even less than that.”

Aside from swiftly moving people the approximately 400-kilometer (250-mile) distance, the line will allow the moving of goods from the Eilat port to terminals on the Mediterranean, the premier said.

Numerous such plans have been floated in the past, but none has gotten off the ground.

Netanyahu, in his cabinet statement, made little mention of his government’s highly divisive judicial overhaul program, though he noted that the coalition would “try to reach agreements” with the opposition during the summer recess. Opposition Leader Yair Lapid quickly shot that down, saying he would not agree to negotiations unless the government freezes the plans until 2025.

Justice Minister Yariv Levin, the plan’s main architect, was absent from the meeting.

Netanyahu also said at the meeting that his government would focus on alleviating the ongoing cost of living crisis, as well as keeping Israel at the forefront of the world’s fast-developing artificial intelligence field.

Questions about practicality, funding

The plan for the fast rail network, formally approved by the cabinet on Sunday, would see some of the trains running at speeds of up to 250 kilometers (155 miles) per hour.

To plug gaps in current rail provision, the plan, aimed to be completed by 2040, is to connect Kiryat Shemona to the rest of the network via Karmiel, and to run fast lines between Tel Aviv and Beersheba in the south via Ben Gurion Airport, and from Beersheba to Eilat via Dimona.

Eilat is separated from Israel’s main urban centers by the vast Negev and Arava deserts. Dimona, where the southernmost railway station is located, is 208 kilometers (130 miles) from Eilat.

Two wrecked cars and a truck were involved in an accident along Route 90 in the Arava, southern Israel, May 28, 2022. (Courtesy of Arava regional council)

Routes 12 and 90, which connect the resort city to the rest of the country, are dogged by traffic accidents.

But the sheer enormity and cost of taking the railway from Dimona down to Eilat have prevented the realization of such a project, going back to the early years of the state. Indeed, a proposal to build this line has been discussed roughly every decade.

In line with Sunday’s decision, the Transportation Ministry has been tasked with examining options for the various lines, and investigating whether certain sections would be economically viable and worthwhile.

The Transporation Ministry will budget NIS 70 million ($19 million) in 2023 and NIS 130 million ($35 million) in 2024 to plan the network, which is reportedly expected to include a bullet-train segment through the Negev desert.

Israel Railways will be ordered to pick which projects in its multi-year plan to reduce or cut to provide NIS 2.4 billion ($648 million) towards construction.

A joint committee comprising the directors general of the ministries of transportation and finance and the Prime Minister’s Office is to discuss how to finance the project. They are to provide an initial report to the prime minister within 90 days and a full, detailed, report within 180 days (with an additional 90 days allowed if necessary).

The decision also calls for the establishment of a separate committee, to report within 180 days, of representatives from the planning authority, and the ministries of finance, transportation, interior, environmental protection, housing, and Negev, Galilee, and National Resilience. Their brief will be to examine how best to maximize the potential of the Beersheba-to-Eilat stretch, with particular regard to new housing.

A report prepared a decade ago for the Shasha Center for Strategic Studies at Jerusalem’s Hebrew University and the Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel found that there was no basis for claims made at the time about the benefits of a rail link to Eilat.

Illustrative: The Suez Canal near Ismailia, Egypt, August 6, 2015. (AP Photo/Amr Nabil, File)

One claim was that such a terrestrial line would ease the movement of freight from Eilat, on the Red Sea, to the Mediterranean. The researchers argued that the rail line would not have the necessary capacity provided by ships, and that passage through the Suez Canal would remain quicker and cheaper.

A new port would have to be built in Eilat, at enormous financial — and environmental — costs, the report went on. The Gulf of Eilat is home to coral reefs of global importance and is already used for the transport of crude oil.

Passenger traffic would be too little to justify the huge costs of a new railway, the report continued, with a new railhead expected to damage another state-funded project — the international airport serving Eilat.

Great Egret at the International Birding and Research Center Eilat. (Noam Weiss, IBRCE).

Another report from the same year, compiled by the Knesset Research and Information Center, warned that the line (which would be fenced off), combined with the dirt embankments, would block the passage of animals and reduce their habitat and that the fast trains could even hit migrating birds.

Israel Railways’ strategic plan predicts that by 2040, the railway will serve around 300 million passengers annually.

Sunday’s announcement comes almost exactly a decade after a Netanyahu-led cabinet approved a train line linking the center of the country to Eilat. At the time, the project was pilloried as costly and environmentally harmful. It also failed to actually link the Eilat port with the one in Ashdod.

‘Great transport revolution’

After the cabinet meeting, Netanyahu, together with Transportation Minister Miri Regev, Finance Minister  Bezalel Smotrich and a deputy minister from United Torah Judaism, Uri Maklev, held a press briefing to detail the the fast rail plan.

Netanyahu spoke first, heard out the three other speakers, and then returned to the microphone, apparently to take questions. But he simply made a second address and then departed before the Q&A session.

In the first of his two sets of remarks, Netanyahu hailed what he called “the great transport revolution” which he said had already included building a network of new roads and will now see the fast rail system.

He did not elaborate on the prospect he raised at the cabinet meeting earlier about the rail network extending to “Saudi Arabia and the Arabian Peninsula.”

He said the planned rail revolution would redistribute Israel’s population — as it grows to what he posited would one day be 30 million — away from the central region to the south and parts of the north, with immense social, economic and security benefits.

Aerial view of the southern Israeli city of Eilat, October 21, 2015. (Moshe Shai/FLASH90)

Where first prime minister David Ben-Gurion talked of settling the Negev, Netanyahu said, his plan “will bring infrastructure to the Negev.”

“This revolution is now setting out, with a NIS 100 billion budget,” he said, adding that this would be spread over several years, and that there were various ideas about how to fund it.

However improbable the project, he said, “believe me” it will come to pass.

In his second set of remarks, he said the rail revolution is another of the “reforms” he has introduced, and said the great challenge, when introducing reforms, is to persuade people that they are needed. This appeared to be an oblique reference to his hugely divisive and controversial judicial overhaul program.

“The ideological struggle is the hardest,” he said several times.

RFK Jr. and Ramaswamy coming up fast in the outside lanes - The Hill

The views expressed by contributors are their own and not the view of The Hill

Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy
Greg Nash

Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy addresses the Faith and Freedom Coalition’s Road to Majority conference in Washington, D.C., on Friday, June 23, 2023.

There’s an interesting development on the way to the 2024 presidential election. Two outsiders shunned or ignored by the entrenched establishments of both political parties, as well as much of the mainstream media, are connecting with actual voters in a very real way: Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. on the Democratic side and Vivek Ramaswamy on the Republican.

As to why they are outsiders, let’s start with Kennedy. Much of why the entrenched establishment can’t stand him, while millions of Americans are flocking to his vision for our nation, was encapsulated during a townhall-style interview hosted by Fox News anchor Sean Hannity this week.

During the course of the townhall — which was interrupted often by applause by the hundreds in attendance — Kennedy said: “We have a system of cushy socialism for the super-rich and this brutal, savage, merciless capitalism for the poor. And it’s all designed to strip-mine the middle class in this country of all their equity, all of their assets and move it to the upper echelons. And the Covid lockdowns were the final straw. Under Covid lockdowns, we created a billionaire a day and this was Trump and Biden — 500 days of lockdowns — we created a billionaire a day. We moved $4 trillion from the middle class to the super-rich. The people who came into the lockdown with $1 billion increased their wealth on average by 30%. We closed 3.3 million businesses.”

Unbiased observers can see why much of the establishment wants him silenced, while millions of American voters believe they have found their champion for 2024. That said, one of the major problems for Kennedy is that much of the mainstream media is part of that entrenched establishment.

One of the reasons Democrat Kennedy has done so many appearances on Fox News is that much of the mainstream media refuses to have him on their airways. Many journalists, who are supposed to be unbiased and professional, refuse to hear or even debate a point of view from the leading challenger to President Joe Biden.

Is some of the mainstream media now morphing into the policy and communications staff for the Biden campaign? Or, at the very least, the opposition to Kennedy?

All of which brings us back to the voters. The latest Harvard-Harris poll places Kennedy in first place when it comes to favorability: at 47 percent he is ahead of Biden, Trump, DeSantis and every other candidate. His un-favorability is the lowest among all candidates, at just 26 percent. That poll was taken after the recent “Covid-antisemitic” narrative pushed by many in the media and the Democratic Party the previous 10 days.

Clearly, when voters hear Kennedy, he is connecting. His challenge is to find ways to amplify his voice.

Next, we come to Vivek Ramaswamy, who launched his bid for the Republican nomination in February. The multimillionaire biotech entrepreneur is all of 37 years old and has never spent a day in government. He wants to change all of that by taking the top job in all of government.

As with Kennedy, while many in the Republican establishment are ignoring or even mocking Ramaswamy and his campaign, voters seem to be taking an interest in him and his positions.

A number of national surveys have recently shown Ramaswamy surging. Suddenly, he has gone from a complete unknown to third in the polling, trailing only Trump and Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-Fla.).

Why is he moving up so quickly? While there are multiple reasons, three stand out. First, he has condensed his campaign for the White House into a simple message that resonates with voters: “Excellence over Victimhood. Democracy over Aristocracy. America over China. Diversity of Thought over Appearance. Truth over Relativism. Equal Opportunity over Equal Results.”

The second is that as a Republican candidate of color, his life story is also touching those who hear and identify with it. Born to Indian immigrant parents, Ramaswamy graduated from Harvard with a degree in biology before going on to Yale Law School to get his J.D.

Third, unlike the unethical blackballing of RFK Jr. by many in the mainstream media, Ramaswamy has been welcomed with mostly open arms and has jumped at virtually every chance to be on TV. This strategy is paying off as, slowly but surely, more voters not only get to know him but hear of his vision for the nation.

Even though he is surging in the polls and has easily qualified for the first GOP debate in August, some rival campaigns refuse to give him the respect he has earned. As NBC News reported, an operative for another campaign condescendingly said, “He’s not a real candidate. His campaign is built on Twitter. He’s everything to everybody always. We don’t really think about him. And at no point are we going to engage with him.”

I have little doubt that, like an opposing Super Bowl team that just got trashed by the competition, the Ramaswamy campaign already has that quote up on a bulletin board.

The entrenched establishments and the mainstream media can dismiss RFK Jr. and Ramaswamy all they want, but the voters may decide that outsiders are in for 2024.

Douglas MacKinnon, a political and communications consultant, was a writer in the White House for Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush, and former special assistant for policy and communications at the Pentagon during the last three years of the Bush administration.

8 Unhealthiest Fast-Food Baked Goods To Avoid Right Now - Eat This, Not That

Fast food restaurants are best known for their burgers, chicken sandwiches, french fries, and refreshing fountain drinks, but those aren't the only delicacies these chains offer. Whether you're making your way through the drive-thru in the morning or looking to cap off your meal with a treat, you're likely placing an order for a sweet baked good like a cookie, slice of pie, or cinnamon roll. Unfortunately, some of these fast-food baked goods are nearly as unhealthy as the main event, and they can take your already calorically dense meal over the edge. But if you know what to look for, you can still enjoy a sweet treat with a little more peace of mind.

"When considering the unhealthiest baked goods at fast-food restaurants, we want to look at the total calories, fat, and sugar," says Mary Sabat MS, RDN, LD. "Fast-food baked goods are often unhealthy due to their high levels of sugar, unhealthy fats (such as trans fats and saturated fats), and refined carbohydrates, and too much of these ingredients can contribute to excessive calories and a lack of essential nutrients."

Of course, it's important to treat yourself to your favorite desserts from time to time, but being aware of the worst ones can help you find more balance. "So while most fast-food baked goods are not going to be super healthy choices, the following are the worst ones available right now," says Sabat. Read on to discover which sweet treats are better left untouched, and for more, don't miss The #1 Unhealthiest Meal to Order at Every Major Fast-Food Chain.

McDonald's cinnamon roll
McDonald's

PER ORDER: 540 calories, 16 g fat (7 g saturated fat), 450 mg sodium, 90 g carbs (4 g fiber, 43 g sugar), 10 g protein

According to Sabat, McDonald's certainly has its fair share of unhealthy baked good options, starting with the cinnamon roll.

"The McDonald's Cinnamon Roll is considered unhealthy due to its high calorie content (540 calories), significant fat (17 grams), and large amount of sugar (43 grams)," says Sabat. "Consuming such a treat regularly can lead to weight gain, increased risk of heart disease and diabetes, and poor satiety due to its low nutrient content."

She adds that "While occasional consumption is not harmful, moderation and balance are crucial for maintaining a healthy diet and lifestyle."

McDonald's apple fritter
McDonald's

PER ORDER: 510 calories, 29 g fat (9 g saturated fat), 360 mg sodium, 56 g carbs (2 g fiber, 25 g sugar), 5 g protein

Similar warnings can be said for the McDonald's Apple Fritter. Sabat considers this one unhealthy primarily because of its high calorie, fat, and sugar content, compounded by the fact that it is a fried pastry. "With 510 calories, 29 grams of fat, and 24 grams of sugar in a single serving, consuming this treat regularly can contribute to weight gain and obesity, and the high-fat content can raise bad cholesterol levels, increasing the risk of heart disease," says Sabat.

Sabat also warns that when you consume something with this much sugar and very little fiber, "the substantial sugar content can lead to rapid spikes in blood sugar levels, causing energy crashes, increased hunger, and potential long-term health issues."

Burger King HERSHEY'S Sundae Pie
Burger King

PER ORDER: 310 calories, 18 g fat (12 g saturated fat), 230 mg sodium, 32 g carbs (1 g fiber, 22 g sugar), 3 g protein

The Burger King Pie is tempting just by the looks of it alone, and while you don't need to avoid it entirely, this one may contribute to potential issues if consumed on a regular basis.

Sabat put this pie on the list because of "its high calorie, fat, and sugar content, and the high fat content on a regular basis can contribute to raised bad cholesterol levels, increasing the risk of heart disease and other cardiovascular issues," she says. "Additionally, the significant sugar content can cause rapid spikes in blood sugar levels." Because of these qualities, Sabat argues that "regular consumption of this pie can contribute to an imbalanced diet and should be limited as part of a healthy eating pattern."

Starbucks cookie
Starbucks

PER ORDER: 360 calories, 18 g fat (11 g saturated fat, 0.5 g trans fat), 220 mg sodium, 47 g carbs (2 g fiber, 31 g sugar), 6 g protein

"The Starbucks Chocolate Chunk Cookie has 360 calories, 18 grams of fat, and 31 grams of sugar in just one cookie, and it can contribute to weight gain and other health issues if consumed frequently," says Sabat. She adds that on its own, this cookie is loaded with sugar and fat, but, "People might grab it as an add-on to their already high-sugar drink, such as a sugary coffee or frappuccino, unintentionally compounding the sugar intake of their overall order. This combination can lead to excessive sugar consumption in a single sitting, which can negatively impact health and contribute to an unhealthy diet."

Popeye's apple pie
Popeye's

PER ORDER: 240 calories, 16 g fat (6 g saturated fat), 260 mg sodium, 35 g carbs (1 g fiber, 12 g sugar), 3 g protein

Popeye's is famous for its fried chicken, spicy chicken sandwiches, and its handheld apple pie. But unfortunately, Sabat puts the Popeyes Cinnamon Apple Pie on the list of unhealthy fast-food baked goods because "despite being a quick option, it is still considered an unhealthy choice due to the fact that it is fried."

She adds that "While it may seem appealing, the frying process adds unhealthy trans fats to the pastry, and these fats can raise cholesterol levels." Furthermore, "consuming fried foods regularly can have detrimental effects on your overall health, making it important to be mindful of such choices and opt for healthier, nutrient-rich alternatives."

Popeye's Oreo cheesecake
Popeye's

PER ORDER: 580 calories, 36 g fat (19 g saturated fat, 1 g trans fat), 520 mg sodium, 56 g carbs (1 g fiber, 41 g sugar), 7 g protein

Even though the handheld pie at Popeye's is deep-fried and loaded with sugar, it's not as bad nutritionally as the Popeye's Oreo Cheesecake Cup. It has 19 grams of saturated fat, which is more than what the American Heart Association recommends for an entire day, and it contains 1 gram of trans fat, which nearly meets the World Health Organization's suggested limit of 2.2 grams. When you consider the fact that these numbers are coming from just your dessert, it may make you think twice before consuming this one on a regular basis.

Arby's Reeses cookie
Arby's

PER ORDER: 463 calories, 25 g fat (11 g saturated fat), 400 mg sodium, 54 g carbs (2 g fiber, 36 g sugar), 7 g protein

Even though most people head to Arby's for their roast beef and curly fries, this fast-food joint also offers yummy baked goods, like the Arby's Reese's Peanut Butter Cup Cookie. However, even though it's delicious, you may want to consume this cookie infrequently and avoid the added saturated fat and sugar on top of your already calorie-heavy meal.

"This cookie may seem like an innocent treat, but it is an unhealthy baked good for several reasons," says Sabat. "With 463 calories, 25 grams of fat, and 36 grams of sugar in a single cookie. The significant fat content—especially the saturated fat—can raise bad cholesterol levels, increasing the risk of heart disease."

Sabat also adds that Moreover, the substantial sugar content can lead to rapid blood sugar spikes, causing energy crashes and heightened cravings. Consuming such sugary and high-calorie treats regularly can disrupt a balanced diet and negatively impact overall health. It's crucial to be aware of the nutritional content of such indulgences and opt for healthier choices to maintain a more well-rounded approach to eating.

White castle brownie on a stick
White Castle

PER ORDER: 240 calories, 12 g fat (7 g saturated fat), 90 mg sodium, 34 g carbs (1 g fiber, 26 g sugar), 2 g protein

The White Castle Fudge Dipped Brownie is one of the more unique desserts on our list, and "while it may seem like a tempting treat, it is considered unhealthy for a few reasons," says Sabat. "With 240 calories, 12 grams of fat, and 26 grams of sugar in one brownie, it contains a significant amount of empty calories." Not only that, but this much sugar in just one sitting, with only 1 gram of fiber, can instantly spike your blood sugar.

"It's essential to be mindful of such indulgences and opt for healthier snacks and desserts to support a more well-rounded and nourishing approach to eating," adds Sabat.
